Wine stacked in crates and piled high, awaiting sale, in the cellar of a small, family-run winery in Maikammer. Maikammer is a small town of just over 4000 inhabitants in the Pfalz (Palatinate) region and on the famed German Weinstraße. Vineyards dominate the landscape, just as wine-making dominates the economy.

In the residential street Gilbertstraße not far from the Trier old city, you'll find the Weinkellerei Förster, with it's splendidly decorated entry gate. It is one of many wineries and wine cellars in and around Trier.

In der Gilbertstraße, unweit von der Trierer Altstadt, steht die Weinkellerei Förster, mit ihrem schön gezierten Eingangstor. Sie ist eine von vielen Weinkellereien in und um Trier.

I’m going to stick with yesterday’s theme and post another photo of one of Trier’s many churches. This time, it’s the Trierer Dom, the Trier Cathedral, seen here towering over the surrounding buildings. This photo is taken from Liebfrauenstraße.

Ich bleibe beim gestrigen Thema und veröffentlich heute ein weiteres Foto von einer der vielen Trierer Kirchen. Dieses Mal ist’s der Trierer Dom, den man hier sieht wie er die umliegenden Gebäuden überragt. Das Foto wurde in der Liebfrauenstraße gemacht.

Overlooking the main market square in the heart of Trier is the Church of St. Gangolf, with its 62m tall steeple. The St. Gangolfskirche was first built starting in 958 AD, and replaced with a new design between 1284 and 1344. But the church as it stands today and as you see it here was not erected until the beginning of the 16th century. It is closed off from the hustle and bustle of Trier's market square by a walled courtyard, which provides a nice spot for quiet respite from all the comings and goings outside.

Am Hautpmarkt im Herzen Triers steht die St. Gangolfskirche, mit ihrem 62m hohen Kirchturm. Die St. Gangolfskirche wurde erstmals ab 958 AD erbaut, und dann zwischen 1284 und 1344 durch einen Neubau ersetzt. Aber die Kirche, samt Turm, sowie sie jetzt ist und so wie ihr sie hier seht wurde erst Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts errichtet. Die Kirche wird durch einen Kirchhof mit hohen Steinmauern von der Hektik des Trierer Marktplatzes beschützt, so dass sie einen schönen Platz darstellt, wo man sich in Ruhe von dem ganzen Rumtreiben draußen in der Innenstadt erholen kann.

Here’s the reason why the house in my last post was only half a house: it’s because right next door, right alongside a main street in the Trier old town, they appear to be excavating Roman ruins. At least, that’s what it looked like to me. But now, via Trierdailyphoto and Snoopland blog, I discover that in fact it’s eventually going to be a new shopping centre. How dull!

Hier also der Grund, warum das Haus vom letzten Post nur ein halbes Haus war: Direkt nebenan, direkt an einer der Hauptstraßen der Trierer Altstadt, wird ausgegraben. So wie es aussieht, sind es römische Ruinen. Oder so habe ich anfangs zumindest gedacht. Nun aber erfahre ich durch Trierdailyphoto und Snoopland blog, dass es eigentlich bloß ein neues Einkaufszentrum werden sollte. Wie langweilig!

In one of the main streets of the Trier old town, I was amazed to discover that half a house had disappeared where I could swear there used to be a whole house. It must get a bit draughty, don’t you think?

Auf einer der Hauptstraßen des Trierer Altstadts war ich neulich ganz verblüfft, als ich entdeckte, dass ein halbes Haus fehlte. Ich hätte schwören können, dass hier bis vor Kurzem ein ganzes Haus stand. Es zieht bestimmt wie verrückt, oder?

And that's exactly what I've been doing. Spent a few days in Berlin, hence the lack of photos of Trier. Normal service should now resume.

Und gerade das habe ich in letzter Zeit auch gemacht. Ich war einige Tage in Berlin, daher auch keine Fotos von Trier. Das normale Programm geht ab jetzt wieder los.

Now here's a house you can't miss, especially in the sunshine. Located just south of the Trier old city, in Gilbertstraße, this brightly-coloured beauty makes you feel all spring-like just to look at it.

Ein Haus, das nicht zu übersehen ist, vor allem wenn die Sonne scheint. Nicht weit von der Altstadt entfernt, Richtung Süden, in der Gilbertstraße, vermittelt dieses kunterbunte Haus schon beim Anblick gewisse Frühlingsgefühle.

Not far from the central old town of Trier is the Jewish cemetary where, it is said, Karl Marx's grandparents are buried. But it's a secret cemetary. There is no entrance, and the concrete walls surrounding it have been increased in height such that you'd never even know it was there. Except, that is, from the courtyard of one residential house, where the wall is low and you can look in. A secret peek at a secret cemetary.

Nicht weit von der Trierer Altstadt entfernt ist der jüdische Friedhof, wo angeblich die Großeltern von Karl Marx begraben sind. Er ist allerdings ein geheimer Friedhof. Es gibt keinen Eingang und die Betonmauer drumherum sind vergrößert worden, so daß keiner ahnen würde, es steht ein Friendhof dahinter. Es gibt eine Ausnahme: der Hof eines Mehrfamilienhauses, wo die Mauer niedrig ist und man reinschauen kann. Ein geheimer Blick in einen geheimen Friedhof.

So, jetzt wird's endlich mal Zeit, mit diesem Blog anzufangen. Wenn auf diesem Blog "one photo at a time" steht, steht auch "one photo at a time" drin. Es soll euch an Deutschlands älteste Stadt, aus meiner Sicht, heranführen durch jeweils ein Foto. Obwohl ich versuchen werde, häufig und regelmäßig zu aktualisieren, kann ich nicht versprechen, dass ich jeden Tag neu posten kann. Sagen wir mal: So oft wie ich nur schaffen kann. Ich hoffe, das was ihr hier sieht gefällt euch.
